13th Street Sewer Replacement

Post Date:04/11/2017 8:37 AM
The City of Manhattan Beach is currently preparing to construct the replacement of a sewer line on 13th Street between Manhattan Avenue and the Strand. This line was originally installed in 1926 and is in need of immediate replacement due to its recent failure. The project is anticipated to begin soon and estimated to take 6 weeks to complete. The overall objectives of this project are to:

• Improve the sewer system’s performance by upgrading the pipe size
• Reduce the potential for sewer pipe blockages and backups due to tree root intrusion
• Reducing the frequency of sewer maintenance and emergency response

The current sewer main is located in the public right-of-way, south of 13th Street’s centerline in
the encroachment area commonly considered walk street front yards. The new sewer line will be relocated out of this “yard” encroachment area and into the walk street sidewalk area. This new location will require extending home sewer laterals from their existing connection points to new connection points. Sewer service for the majority of area residents will be unaffected with only five homes located along the south side of 13th Street between Manhattan Avenue and Ocean Drive experiencing temporary service interruptions.

Please feel free to contact Tim Birthisel, the City's project engineer at (310) 802-5368 with any questions or concerns.
